For most of my life, drawing—sketching family members, my pets, and things in nature that capture my interest—has been a leisurely pastime. It wasn’t until midlife that I became more intent on studying the academics of drawing. By using how-to books, watching countless YouTube videos and copying the works of favorite artists (in particular, John Singer Sargent), as well as by taking local classes in figure drawing, pastel portraiture, and Atelier drawing, I have seen the quality of my work improve and have developed a greater appreciation for the effects that can be achieved with charcoal.
These days art has taken center stage in my daily routine. Still-life and portraiture are subjects I enjoy the most. My animal portraits are drawn from reference photos. Many of the photos I use are given with permission by photographers with photography skills far greater than my own. I am deeply appreciative of their own artistry and thank them for their generosity. — Lisa Goldberg
